Visit Japan Web lets you complete Japan entry procedures online in advance. You can obtain QR codes for immigration and customs beforehand.
Go to the official Visit Japan Web site and create an account with your email address. Click the link in the verification email.
Visit Japan WebEnter your passport details (name, date of birth, nationality, passport number).
Enter your arrival date, flight number, and the name of where you will stay (your company or dormitory).
Enter immigration and customs information and generate the QR code. Save a screenshot.
If you have no Visit Japan Web QR code, fill out the Disembarkation Card.
Tick "Others" for Purpose of visit and write your own residence status in the brackets, in English. Write the status name — not the word "work".

Your status is printed on your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). If you are unsure, ask your employer or school.
Write the period shown on your COE (Certificate of Eligibility). It is usually 1 Year or 1 Year 3 Months. Match it to the period on the Residence Card you receive.
At the immigration counter, show your QR code or Disembarkation Card together with your passport and Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
Fingerprint scan and face photo. At 10 airports (New Chitose, Sendai, Narita, Haneda, Chubu, Kansai, Kobe, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Naha) your Residence Card is issued on the spot. If you enter through any other airport or seaport, your passport is marked "Residence Card to be issued later" and the card is issued after you register your address at the city/ward office (normally mailed to that address).
Collect your checked baggage at the carousel.
With a QR code, use the electronic gate. Without one, submit a customs declaration form.
Yes. "Student" is covered by the Certificate of Eligibility (only "Temporary Visitor" and "Permanent Resident" are excluded). In most cases the school you will attend applies on your behalf. Processing normally takes 1 to 3 months, so start early. The period of stay for "Student" is decided individually and cannot exceed 4 years and 3 months.
