Find affordable furniture and appliances β How to use the ATRENS used marketplace
When you start living in Fukuoka, the first significant expense you'll need is furniture and appliances. Buying a refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, and bed new can easily exceed 100,000 yen. However, in this city, someone moves out and someone returns to their home country every month. If you can take what they're getting rid of, the cost will drop considerably.
1. First, check out the ATRENS secondhand market
The ATRENS community has a secondhand market where members living in the same city can buy, sell, and exchange items. Before searching on external sites, check here first. Sometimes, refrigerators, washing machines, and beds become available all at once when people return to their home countries or move out.
- Furniture: Beds / Desks / Chairs & Sofas / Storage / Lighting / Curtains & Rugs
- Home Appliances: Refrigerators / Washing Machines / Microwaves / Rice Cookers / Vacuum Cleaners / Air Conditioners & Fans / Televisions
- There are also listings for "Giving Away for Free". Disposing of items costs money, so some people are looking for someone to take them.
- Listing texts are automatically translated and displayed. It's okay even if you and the other party speak different languages.
Anyone can just view. Listing and inquiries are only for members who have joined the community. If you haven't joined yet, please do so from Join the Community.
2. Get notified when something you want becomes available (Purchase Request Alert)
Refrigerators and washing machines aren't always available when you want them. Instead of checking every day, you can register for a purchase request alert and be notified when a listing that matches your criteria becomes available.
- Category (You can choose in two stages, like Home Appliances β Refrigerator)
- Keywords
- Looking for new or used
- Budget (from how much to how much) β Items outside your budget will not be sent. Free items will be sent regardless of budget.
You can register up to 10 alerts per person.
3. Sell your items when moving or returning home
Disposing of unused furniture and appliances costs money (bulky waste requires an application and disposal ticket). Selling them helps the next person and reduces your own burden.
- Listings can be made from the market listing page. A maximum of 5 photos are allowed.
- Listings for sale: 50 points / Listings for free: 0 points (as of September 2026)
- Listings last for 30 days. If the price drops, you can raise it (30 points), or if you want to make it stand out, you can use highlight display (200 points, 7 days).
- You can list up to 10 items per day.
4. Safe Transfer
ATRENS does not hold money. Money transactions are conducted directly between the parties involved. Therefore, please observe the following:
- The handover will take place during the daytime in a place where there are people. Choose a location that is easily accessible to both parties, such as in front of a train station or shop.
- For large appliances, decide on the method of transport beforehand. Stairs without an elevator will require two people. For refrigerators and washing machines, measure the width of the entrance.
- For refrigerators and washing machines, check on the spot to see if they are powered on and working.
- Items that should not be taken out: Bank accounts, passbooks, cash cards, SIM cards, residence cards, passports, cigarettes. These are prohibited by law. If you see any, please report them.
- After the handover is complete, leave a rating. This will help the next person make a decision.
5. If you still can't find it
If it's not on the market, look for it at recycling shops or second-hand appliance stores. Regarding stores in Fukuoka City, I will re-check the actual prices and shipping costs and add them later.
Even when buying new items, a new life set (a bundle of a refrigerator, washing machine, and microwave oven) from an electronics retailer may be cheaper than buying them individually.
