Kana
- What
- Learn to read hiragana and katakana
- Why
- If you cannot read kana, word cards are just pictures. Skipping this slows everything that follows.
- How much
- 10 min a day, 2 weeks
2
Getting set
- What
- New? Take the N5 course. Studied before? Take the level test.
- Why
- Starting above your level means too many unknown words, and you stop. The level test is not a pass/fail exam β it just finds your starting point.
- How much
- 25 min, once
3
Daily study
- What
- Open βTodayβ. Words β grammar β questions β listening.
- Why
- Doing words and kanji first makes grammar much faster. Short and daily beats long and occasional.
- How much
- 10β15 min a day
4
Week check
- What
- Test the weekβs vocabulary, kanji and grammar together
- Why
- If you move on assuming you remember, week 4 arrives empty. A weekly check catches what is slipping.
- How much
- Once a week, 15 min
5
Mock exams
- What
- Full-format mock exams β monthly at first, weekly from two months out.
- Why
- Knowing the material and finishing in time are different skills. Pacing only comes from practice.
- How much
- 60β90 min each
6
Final stretch
- What
- Review mistakes instead of new questions. Take the last mock at least a week before.
- Why
- New material does not stick this late. What pays off now is locking down the questions you almost got right.
- How much
- 20 min review a day

Common mistakes
- Putting off listening β more people fail N5 on listening than on grammar. One item a day from week 3.
- Putting off kanji β doing it early speeds up grammar and reading.
- Taking many mocks β the score comes from reviewing mistakes, not from the number of tests.
- Cramming β 15 minutes every day beats two hours on the weekend.
